Coordination of the European Capital of Smart Tourism project, Málaga 2020

Sextaplanta carried out the curatorial work to coordinate the action plan for the European Capital of Smart Tourism, Málaga 2020.

To this end, a working team was assigned which, together with the Tourism Department of Málaga City Council, worked jointly on the actions planned for the capital programme.

The programme was carried out during 2020 and was extended until September 2021 due to Covid.

To coordinate the actions, work was carried out both on a project management platform and through regular follow-up meetings.

Among the most notable actions carried out, we can mention the organisation of the exchange workshop between the universities of Málaga and Gothenburg, the international workshop on good practices with other European capitals, media cooperation with leading international media outlets, the presentation at ITB Berlin Now 2021, or the technical report.

The tourism sector is the most important in Europe, receiving more than 700 million international arrivals and generating more than 25 million direct and indirect jobs. However, one of the biggest challenges the sector has faced in recent years is the difficulty of finding qualified staff for the jobs being created.

The labour market challenge in Europe’s tourism sector

It is time to change the traditional image of hospitality. This constantly evolving sector offers a wide range of career opportunities for people of all profiles. However, to make the most of this potential, it is essential to have appropriate training that responds to the real needs of the labour market.

Our project aims to connect students with businesses, facilitating their entry into the labour market and contributing to the creation of a more competitive and sustainable tourism sector.”

Skills exchange programme for dual VET programmes

The solution provided is a new approach to micro-training in the workplace, which we have called “Skills Swap”. The main objective is to promote continuous training for tourism professionals, facilitating staff exchanges between companies in the sector so that their teams acquire new competences and skills in new fields. This exchange, which can range from half-day periods to whole weeks, has been designed so that professionals acquire new skills through full immersion in another company.

By creating a network of participating companies, both employers and their staff have benefited from “sending” and “hosting” training, establishing new contacts and building trust, while also receiving support from our coordinators.

The eTracker, a web app for tracking Skills Swaps

Sextaplanta’s role in the project

The consulting and development team led the project chapter dedicated to the design and development of a Web App to manage and implement employee exchanges between companies. The App also enables employees to keep an evidence diary of the exchanges carried out.
